Dealing with lost or stolen devices

Top  Previous  Next

If one of your users reports a device as lost or stolen, you will need to make sure that:

1.The user's data is removed from the device.
2.That the device can no longer connect to you mSuite / mDesign system.

Remote Kill

You can remote kill a device from two areas in the management console.

From Users and Groups - use this method if your users do not have multiple devices.

1.Expand the node Users and Groups in the navigation tree.  Expand any lower level groups until you can see the user's name in the action pane.
2.Right mouse click the user in the action pane and choose All Tasks > Security > Remote Kill.
3.On the Remote Kill Device dialog, if your user only has 1 device, the correct device will be selected.
4.Make sure that the Notification server is set to the machine running your mSuite/mDesign Server software.
5.Click OK.
6.A message will now be sent to the device to tell it to hard-reset itself.
7.Should the device be turned off when the remote wipe command is sent, as soon as the device is turned on again, the message will be delivered and the device will be wiped.
8.Once the device is wiped, it looses any capability to connect to your system.

From Administration > Devices - use this method if you can identify the device by phone number or some other unique feature

1.Expand the Administration node in the navigation tree
2.Right mouse click Devices and select Add/Remove Columns from the pop-up menu
3.Use the controls in the Select Device Columns dialog to ensure that the characteristic (such as telephone number) that you are going to use to identify the device is in the list of columns to be displayed.
4.Click OK to complete the Select Device Columns dialog
5.The display in the action pane will update to include the columns you have selected.
6.You can now find the device that you want to send a remote kill command to - note you can sort the display by clicking on the column headings.
7.Once you have located the device, right mouse click the row for that device, and from the pop-up menu select All Task > Remote Kill.
8.On the Remote Kill Device dialog the correct device will be selected.
9.Make sure that the Notification server is set to the machine running your mSuite/mDesign Server software.
10.Click OK.
11.A message will now be sent to the device to tell it to hard-reset itself.
12.If the device is turned off when the remote wipe command is sent, as soon as the device is turned on again, the message will be delivered and the device will be wiped.
13.Once the device is wiped it looses any capability to connect to your system.

Note: Remote kill can be rendered ineffective if the SIM is removed from the device.  If security is important, always use an appropriate security policy on the device.  This will wipe the device after a number of failed logon attempts.
